God of War is a game about violence--specifically, the visceral, brutal kind that results from hacking through hordes of demons with a magic war axe. It's a testosterone-fueled power fantasy with little room for restraint or mercy. Developer Sony Santa Monica Studio clearly knows this, because it gleefully revels in the over-the-top carnage. From beginning to end, God of War is an excessively brutal affair that revels in the wanton slaughter of mythological creatures.

Kratos, the series' lead character and perpetual god of wrath, is back and more furious than ever. After spending years trapped in Norse purgatory and losing his son, Atreus, along the way, Kratos is hellbent on revenge. The opening moments of the game find him butchering his way through armies of undead warriors to reach their king, Baldur. It's a display of bloodshed and brutality that sets the tone for what's to come.

This isn't a game for the faint of heart; It's filled with scenes of gory violence and harsh language. Kratos routinely drops F-bombs as he stomps heads and splits enemies in two with his magical axe. Atreus isn't much better; he frequently swears at his enemies as he pelts them with arrows from afar. Even worse, some segments actively encourage players to kill defenseless creatures in order to gain powerups. In one instance, I had to sacrifice dozens of baby animals in order to imbue my weapons with their power. It was stomach-turning stuff that made me feel decidedly dirty after playing it.

And yet God of War is also one of the most stunningly beautiful games I've played in years. The world is expertly crafted and alive with activity; mythical creatures wander the forests while gods do battle high up in the sky. The attention to detail is staggering, especially on PS4 Pro where you can toggle between two graphics settings: Cinematic or Performance mode. Cinematic mode trades some framerate stability for graphical enhancements like improved textures, 4K resolution, and HDR support; Performance mode maintains a locked 60fps at all times (unless you're braving some awfully demanding boss fights). No matter which mode you choose, God of War looks great—although I tended to prefer Performance mode since it allowed me to savor all those delicious details without worrying about framerate dips or hiccups..

So doesGodofWar live up to itsexcessivelyviolent reputation? Hell yeah! Is it appropriate for kids? Probably not— although parental discretion is definitely advised .
